British Science Week
Pupils across the school celebrated British Science Week by taking part in a range of exciting, hands-on investigations and experiments. Throughout the week, children demonstrated curiosity, collaboration and excellent scientific thinking as they explored questions, made predictions and analysed their findings.
KS1
As part of Science Week, KS1 took part in an exciting investigation to discover which type of chocolate melts the fastest: white chocolate, milk chocolate or Aero chocolate.
The children began by asking thoughtful scientific questions and making predictions about what they thought would happen. They then carefully carried out their investigation, observing the changes as each type of chocolate melted. After discussing their findings, the children discovered that Aero chocolate melted the quickest, suggesting that the bubbles inside may allow it to warm up more quickly.
Pupil Voice:
- "I wonder why chocolate smells the way it does." – Kawsar
- "I think white chocolate tasted the sweetest." – Serena
- "Why does chocolate get hot in your mouth?" – Edwin

LKS2
LKS2 enjoyed a range of practical investigations throughout Science Week. Children began by sorting and categorising different objects based on their own criteria, discovering that classifying objects can sometimes be more challenging than expected.
Pupils also explored a variety of simple scientific experiments that could be recreated at home, including making cloud dough, rainbow milk and oobleck. Through these activities, children discussed how different ingredients react and change when combined.
One of the highlights of the week was investigating the chemical reaction between white vinegar and baking soda to inflate a balloon. This practical activity generated great excitement and encouraged pupils to ask questions and make observations.
Pupil Voice:
- "It was trickier than we thought it would be!" – Pleasant
- "I really liked being able to choose what I had to sort." – Lily
- "I loved getting to touch the cloud dough; it felt like whipped cream." – Lucas
- "My favourite was the oobleck — it was hard, but you could pour it as well!" – Eleanor
UKS2
As part of British Science Week, Fuji class took part in a lively, hands-on investigation based on the class-generated question: "Does having longer arms make you throw further?"
Working as scientists, pupils measured their arm lengths, carried out a fair test using vortexes and accurately recorded the distance of each throw. The children demonstrated impressive teamwork and scientific enquiry skills throughout the investigation.
Back in the classroom, pupils analysed their results to identify patterns and discuss factors that might influence how far an object travels. Their conclusions demonstrated thoughtful scientific reasoning, with many recognising that while arm length can have an impact, factors such as technique, strength and consistency are also important.
The investigation provided an excellent opportunity for pupils to develop their enquiry skills while demonstrating curiosity, collaboration and critical thinking—qualities that are at the heart of British Science Week.
Through the wide range of activities undertaken across the school, pupils developed their scientific knowledge and skills while fostering a genuine enthusiasm for science and discovery.
- "I enjoyed measuring our arm lengths and seeing if it made a difference to how far we could throw." – Oscar
- "It was interesting to compare everyone's results because not everyone with long arms threw the furthest." – Mia-Rose
- "I liked working as a scientist and finding out that lots of different things can affect an investigation." – Scarlett
