Subjects: Maths

Our Vision

Our Primary School Maths Vision

At our school, we believe that every child can achieve, succeed, progress and enjoy maths. Mathematics is a subject for all, and we are committed to ensuring that every learner feels confident, capable and excited to explore the world through numbers, patterns and problem solving.

We value mathematical thinking as much as getting the right answer. We want children to be brave, curious learners who are not afraid to make mistakes, who are willing to ‘have a go’, and who understand that challenge, discussion and reflection are all part of learning maths.

Our Approach to Teaching and Learning

Our maths teaching is:

  • Enabling – giving children the tools, strategies and confidence to work independently.
  • Inspiring – sparking curiosity and a genuine desire to learn.
  • Inclusive and adaptive – ensuring all children can access learning and make progress.
  • Challenging and supportive – stretching thinking while providing the right scaffolds.
  • Responsive – adapting in the moment to children’s understanding and moving learning on when children are ready.
  • Engaging and purposeful – making maths meaningful, active and connected to the real world.

We create vocabulary-rich classrooms where children confidently use mathematical language to explain, justify and reason. Through the CPA approach (Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract), children build deep understanding using manipulatives, visual representations and clear models before moving to more formal methods.

What Maths Looks Like in Our School

  • Children use manipulatives and visual representations to articulate their thinking
  • Classrooms are vocabulary-rich, with mathematical language modelled and embedded consistently across the school.
  • Lessons focus on the process of learning, reasoning and real-life problem solving rather than repetition of questions once understanding is secure.
  • Teaching is responsive: when children demonstrate understanding, they move quickly to the next concept or challenge.
  • Emphasis on rich mathematical activity, discussion and exploration.
  • Children are actively engaged, discussing ideas, exploring strategies and explaining their thinking.
  • Mistakes are welcomed as part of learning and children feel safe to take risks.
  • All learners know when to use strategies independently and when to seek support.
  • Maths is accessible for all, with appropriate challenge and support so that every child experiences success.

Our Vision for Year 6 Learners

By the time our pupils leave Year 6, they will be:

  • Confident, independent mathematicians who believe in their own ability.
  • Motivated, enthusiastic and positive about their maths journey.
  • Secure in key concepts, having developed deep understanding from strong foundations.
  • Fluent in core skills and able to reason, problem-solve and communicate mathematically.
  • Comfortable tackling new challenges and explaining their thinking.
  • Ready for the next stage of their education with confidence, pride and enjoyment in maths.
